Aurora, Colo. – A man was fatally shot by an Aurora police officer following a traffic stop that escalated into a violent confrontation Saturday evening near Interstate 225 and 6th Avenue.

According to Police Chief Todd Chamberlain, the incident began when an officer initiated a routine traffic stop at about **7:30 p.m.**, which was not complied with by the driver. The vehicle then collided with at least two other cars. The driver exited the vehicle and advanced toward the officer in a menacing manner, while apparently shouting and drawing attention from others nearby.

Authorities say the suspect appeared to be heading toward a handgun lying at the scene. The solitary officer, who had maneuvered into the intersection during the encounter, discharged his weapon—firing between one to three rounds. Firefighters confirmed the suspect died at the scene.

The man was later identified by Aurora City Council member Alison Coombs as **Rajon Belt-Stubblefield**. Details remain limited regarding whether the suspect was armed. Investigators are reviewing body-worn camera footage, traffic “Flock” cameras, and potential bystander videos. Chamberlain emphasized that other officers at the scene did not immediately render aid, citing the chaotic nature of the situation.

Chief Chamberlain assured that both internal and external investigations—conducted alongside the District Attorney’s office—are underway, promising transparency and a full accounting of the facts.
