NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A man was killed and a woman injured after a suspect opened fire on them while they were clearing a lot of land, then later shot at a responding deputy, according to Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon in the area of Davista Avenue and Sawtell Street in New Port Richey.

Authorities identified the suspect as Aaron Rodriguez, 32. According to Sheriff Nocco, Rodriguez approached the man and woman, who knew each other, and began arguing with them.

During the confrontation, the man called 911 but was shot while still on the phone with the dispatcher. He later died at the scene. Rodriguez also shot the woman before retreating into his garage.

When deputies arrived, they ordered Rodriguez to drop his weapon. Officials said the suspect refused and opened fire, striking a responding deputy who serves as a K-9 handler.

Deputies returned fire and shot Rodriguez.

Sheriff Nocco said the injured deputy is expected to recover and that both he and his K-9 partner are expected to return to duty.

The wounded woman and Rodriguez were both transported to a hospital. As of Friday afternoon, authorities had not released updates on their conditions.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation into the deputy-involved shooting.
