In a hit-and-run case, a woman was killed while four others were left injured when a speeding car struck five individuals as they were walking on a spacious footpath in Mangaluru. The incident took place around 4 pm near Mannagudda junction in Mangaluru when a speeding white-coloured car smashed into the pedestrians.
Surveillance camera footage captured the scene as a white Hyundai Eon, driven by Kamalesh Baldev, carelessly navigated the road and collided with the pedestrians. The car approached from behind and initially struck four people before running over a woman. Another woman, attempting to evade the oncoming vehicle, was subsequently hit as well.
The footage shows the accused driver crashing into a pole on the footpath and dragging one of the women for a few meters before she collided with a divider.
After the collision, the driver left the scene and parked the car in front of a car showroom before returning to his residence. Subsequently, he, along with his father, voluntarily reported the incident to the police.
Passersby and onlookers at the scene rushed to assist the injured victims. While one individual managed to stand up, albeit with a noticeable limp, two seriously injured persons were transported to the hospital by auto-rickshaw.
23-year-old Roopashri lost her life in the accident, and one woman, along with three young girls, sustained injuries. The police have registered a case against the driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including a charge of causing death by negligence.
