On the evening of January 15, 2026, Hong Kong police shot and killed a man who was armed with a large meat cleaver in Tuen Mun. The incident occurred at around 7 p.m. near Tuen Mun Town Plaza, close to Tuen Wui Road.

Police said the man, believed to be 34 years old and a Hong Kong identity card holder, was brandishing a cleaver with a blade approximately 30 centimetres long. Officers opened fire after determining that the man posed an immediate threat to public safety, including to a nearby passer-by, and after other attempts to restrain him were unsuccessful.

According to preliminary information provided by the man’s family, he may have had a history of mental illness, although this was still under investigation. Police also found a retractable baton and a small amount of suspected illegal drugs on him. Authorities stated that the man had a prior criminal record, including drug-related offences.

Videos circulating online showed the man carrying the weapon and entering the shopping centre, including footage that appeared to show him obtaining the cleaver from inside a shop.
