Police in Salt Lake City have released body camera footage of a fatal shooting involving 47-year-old Jose Hernandez, who was killed after throwing rocks at officers during a confrontation on October 29.

According to authorities, officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a fight near 2100 South and 300 West. Witnesses said a man had been involved in a street altercation, and when police arrived, they found Hernandez sitting on a curb.

Body camera footage shows officers offering medical assistance, which Hernandez declined. As they attempted to question him, he began picking up rocks from nearby landscaping and placing them in his pockets. Officers repeatedly instructed him to stop and put the rocks down.

Hernandez then stood up and began walking away. Officers drew their weapons and followed, continuing to order him to drop what he was carrying. Hernandez ran across traffic before turning and throwing a rock at one of the officers, prompting the officer to open fire.

Hernandez was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. One officer sustained a minor injury during the incident. The West Jordan Police Department is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
