ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The Orange County Sheriff’s Office released body-worn camera footage on Wednesday showing deputies shooting a man who allegedly fled from them while holding a firearm.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on July 5 near the intersection of Orlando Central Parkway and Presidents Drive, where deputies were assisting with a traffic detail.

According to the sheriff’s office, three deputies pursued 18-year-old Giovanny Melendez Torres on foot. After catching up with him and taking him to the ground, one deputy can be heard on the footage asking, “Is that a gun?” Another deputy responds, “Yes,” before both open fire on Melendez Torres.

Deputies rendered first aid immediately after the shooting and recovered a firearm at the scene. Melendez Torres was transported to a hospital with critical injuries.

He has since been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer.

The two deputies involved in the shooting were not injured. Per standard procedure, they have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
