Off duty police officer is killed during shootout with armed robber and wounds his killer - Trinidad and Tobago

A police constable was shot and killed last night in Chaguanas.

The deceased has been identified as PC Dale Mayers, who was last attached to the Arima police station.

Just after 10 p.m. Mayers was liming with his wife and a friend - who is also a licensed firearms holder - at Unique Bar along the Montrose Main Road in Chaguanas, when they were confronted by a lone gunman.

The man, dressed in all black, walked up and announced a hold-up.

However, as he looked away, Mayers pulled out his licensed firearm and shot at the suspect.

The suspect returned fire before turning and fleeing the scene.

Mayers was shot in the chest with the bullet exiting his left arm.

The police and paramedics were notified and Mayers was taken to the Chaguanas District Hospital.

However, he died while undergoing treatment at about 11:06 p.m. police sources said.

A team of officers from the Central Division and the Homicide Bureau responded to the report and made their way to the scene of the shooting.

A firearm was seized at the scene, the Express was told.

Investigators also observed a trail of blood running from the bar to the roadway and as a result, they determined that Mayers had shot and injured his attacker.

An all-points bulletin was issued, and checks were made at all nearby medical institutions.

Just before midnight, a 24-year-old man from Nelson Street in Port of Spain was dropped off at the Port of Spain General Hospital for gunshot wounds.

The police were notified.

The suspect underwent emergency surgery under police guard.

This killing was captured on CCTV cameras which were set up at the bar.

On March 16, Sgt Larry Phillip, who was attached to the T&T Police Service Police Band, was one of five persons shot dead at Harpe Place off Observatory Street, Port of Spain.

Phillip, 51, lived a short distance away from the scene of the shooting.

Rudolph Donnie James, of Beverly Hills in Laventille; Randy Greaves, 32, of Oxford Street in Port of Spain; Pete Noray, 49, of Bart Street in Port of Spain; and Devon Jack, 42, of Chafford Courts in Port of Spain, were also killed in this incident.

A vehicle drove onto the compound and the occupants opened fire on residents without warning before driving off.

They were all shot in the vicinity of Building 6.

Three other persons were also injured in this incident and have since been discharged.

Crime scene investigators recovered over 50 spent shells on the scene of the shooting including rounds of 7.62mm, 5.56mm, and 9mm.

While police recovered the vehicle used in the shooting that day, no one has been held in connection with the killing, the Express was told by police sources.

On February 9, Cpl Marlone Mitchell was fatally shot in the vicinity of Lolita's Bar along the Southern Main Road in McBean Village, Couva.

CCTV footage showed that Mitchell was walking towards a vehicle parked near the bar, when he was confronted by a man in a white vest.

The two men got into a fight, during which the suspect shot Mitchell with his own firearm.

Anthony Hopkins of Quarry Road, Valencia, later surrendered to police in the presence of his attorney.

He was questioned, and later charged with Mitchell's murder.

Police also reportedly seized the fallen officer’s firearm.

This matter is currently before the courts.

On January 17, police constable Ravindra Harrinarine, who was attached to the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch was shot and killed in Valsayn.

This incident was also captured on CCTV cameras.

The footage shows that at about 10 p.m. that night, Harrinarine was seated in his red Subaru automobile with a female companion which was parked along Bassie Street in Spring Village, when three masked men approached and began shooting.

The woman got out, fled, and got into another car.

In CCTV footage, a woman can be seen exiting the scene immediately after the gunfire starts. In the video, the policeman can be seen stepping out of the vehicle and shooting at his assailants, who shoot back.

Harrinarine later died as a result of the injuries sustained.
