The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage showing a fatal officer-involved shooting earlier this month.
The incident unfolded on East 25th Street near Buckman Street during a mental health crisis. According to JSO, 30-year-old Brian Gillis was suspected of setting an exterior wall on fire overnight. His mother called police at around 7 a.m. on August 13 to request a mental health evaluation.
Responding officers, including a partnered mental-health clinician, spoke with Gillis’ family and neighbors. Witnesses said he appeared detached from reality. A perimeter was established, but Gillis left before officers could intervene. The perimeter was later lifted.
Officer Caleb Bumgarner, a K-9 unit officer, later spotted Gillis walking along the sidewalk. He attempted to stop him by name. Gillis then ran away wielding a knife. Bumgarner drove to catch up, exited his vehicle, drew his taser, but then saw Gillis point the knife and demand "back up." The officer switched to his firearm, commanded Gillis to drop the knife, then immediately fired multiple shots as Gillis ran away. Gillis was pronounced dead at the scene.
JSO confirmed the body camera footage backs up this account.
