On Wednesday morning, a U.S. Navy E/A-18G Growler jet crashed into San Diego Bay during a “go-around maneuver” at Naval Air Station North Island. Both pilots safely ejected before impact and were promptly rescued by the sportfishing vessel Premier.
They were then transferred to a Customs and Border Protection craft and taken to a hospital in stable condition. The incident resulted in a significant plume of water and debris upon impact.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation, with weather conditions at the time noted as rainy and misty. Naval Base Coronado is overseeing the investigation and coordinating efforts to manage any potential environmental impacts from the crash.
