A manhunt is underway after a 22-year-old college student was fatally shot while attempting to recover his stolen phone in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The victim, Billy Schmidt, a senior at Pennsylvania State University, was walking home in South Philadelphia at approximately 1:30 a.m. when he was allegedly targeted in a robbery. According to investigators, Schmidt confronted the suspects and demanded the return of his phone before chasing them as they fled. Surveillance footage reportedly captured part of the encounter.

Authorities said Schmidt was shot in the chest during the confrontation. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Police believe at least two suspects were involved and have launched an intensive search to locate those responsible.

Family members described Schmidt as a caring and well-respected young man who was preparing to graduate later this year. His death has sparked outrage within the local community, with residents calling for those responsible to be brought to justice.
