A 29-year-old mother of two was killed after her motorcycle was struck by a passenger train traveling from Kankesanthurai to Colombo.

The fatal accident occurred at an unprotected railway crossing in the Saliyapura area. According to local reports, the victim, a resident of Saliyapura, was returning home on her motorcycle after selling ice buckets at a shop in Anuradhapura as part of her self-employment business.

Authorities said the collision took place as she attempted to cross the railway tracks, resulting in her death at the scene.

Following the incident, local residents raised concerns about the safety of the crossing, claiming that it lacks protective barriers and is not staffed by railway personnel.

Residents also noted that the railway line curves on both sides of the crossing, making it difficult for motorists and pedestrians to see approaching trains until they are already near the tracks.

Community members have called on authorities to take immediate action to improve safety measures at the crossing and prevent further tragedies from occurring in the future.
