Uploaded On:Thursday 3rd of July 2025
On Sunday evening, a severe storm accompanied by thunder and heavy rain swept through various areas of Lahore, causing widespread disruption. Multiple reports came in of trees, electric poles, and signboards being uprooted or falling. A tragic incident occurred in Shadman Phase 1, where a heavy signboard from a shop collapsed onto a passerby, resulting in his instant death.
According to eyewitnesses, around 5 PM, the intensity of the storm suddenly increased. In a well-known commercial area of Shadman Phase 1, the heavy signboard could not withstand the strong gusts of wind and came crashing down.
Coincidentally, a young man was passing by the street at the time, and the heavy signboard fell directly on him. Bystanders rushed to assist the victim and immediately called Rescue 1122. However, upon arrival, the rescue team confirmed that the young man had already succumbed to his injuries. Preliminary medical examination revealed severe head wounds and serious injuries to his ribs.
The police cordoned off the area and collected evidence, while the shop owner is being questioned. Investigations have also been launched into the quality of the signboard, its installation permits, and the approval process by the relevant authorities.
According to the Meteorological Department, heavy winds and rain began in Lahore shortly after 5 PM on Sunday, with wind speeds recorded between 70 to 80 kilometers per hour.
The storm uprooted trees in several areas and caused numerous complaints of fallen electric poles and signboards. Power supply disruptions were reported in various parts of the city including Gulberg, Jail Road, Wahdat Road, Ferozepur Road, Johar Town, Township, and Defence.
