Young man’s hand torn apart during fire sword display in Cruz das Almas - Brazil
Uploaded On:Tuesday 1st of July 2025
The use of flaming swords is a cultural tradition in Cruz das Almas, particularly during the São João festivities. However, the practice remains controversial due to the significant risks involved. A recent incident has once again sparked debate over public safety measures and the enforcement of rules surrounding these devices.

The accident occurred on Sunday night (22) in the Coplan neighborhood. According to eyewitnesses, a young man came into contact with one of the swords just as it exploded, severely injuring his hand and resulting in the amputation of one finger.

Local residents provided immediate first aid before taking him to the city’s Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in critical condition. During the June celebrations, the UPA operates with a specialized team and enhanced facilities to treat burn victims and injuries caused by explosive materials.

Following initial medical treatment, the young man was transferred to the Burns Unit at the Santo Antônio de Jesus Regional Hospital (HRSAJ), a regional reference center for such cases. His current condition has not yet been disclosed.
