Uploaded On:Monday 16th of June 2025

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on June 7, deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office responded to 203 N. Ortman Drive following a 9-1-1 call from the mother of a man reportedly acting erratically in the street. The individual, identified as 30-year-old Terry Washington Jr., was known to have schizophrenia and had reportedly not been taking his medication.

Before arriving at the residence, deputies met with the mother nearby to gather additional information. She stated her son was behaving unpredictably but did not have access to weapons, which had been removed from the home.

Upon arriving, deputies made contact with the man’s father, who informed them that Terry Washington Jr. was in a bedroom and in possession of a knife. Deputies attempted to engage Washington in conversation for approximately five minutes. However, when he exited the room, he immediately charged at a deputy, attempting to stab him. During the altercation, Washington also attempted to seize the deputy’s firearm.

In response, the deputy discharged his service weapon, striking Washington. Deputies provided first aid at the scene until paramedics arrived. Washington was transported to a hospital where he later died. The deputy sustained head lacerations and was treated at a hospital; his condition is reported as stable.
