Police officer was shot in the head during pursuit attempting to detain suspect - Belo Horizonte, Brazil

The crime occurred on Friday night (5), in the Novo Aarão Reis neighborhood, in the North of the capital.

A 29-year-old military police officer was shot during a pursuit of two suspects, on Friday night (5), in the Novo Aarão Reis neighborhood, North Region of Belo Horizonte .

According to information from the Military Police (PM), teams from the 13th Battalion were chasing a car with two armed men along Avenida Risoleta Neves when the vehicle ran over a motorcyclist. After the accident, the suspects disembarked and ran.

Sergeant Roger Dias da Cunha managed to catch up with one of the criminals. He ordered to stop several times, but was surprised by the man, who pulled out a gun and shot the officer several times in the head .

A PM corporal, who was driving a vehicle, continued to pursue the 25-year-old suspect, who was shot and taken to medical care. He has several police experience and, on the date of the crime, he was enjoying the benefit of temporary release from prison .

The other suspect, aged 33, managed to escape, but ended up being found and arrested hours later . The PM mounted a major operation to locate the fugitive.

According to the police report, there was an exchange of gunfire between the police and the criminal. He was shot and located with the help of company dogs in a forest.

The sergeant was rescued and initially taken to the Risoleta Tolentino Neves Hospital, in the Venda Nova Region. Afterwards, he was transferred to João XXIII Hospital, in the Central-South Region of the capital.

On Saturday morning (6), Roger Dias da Cunha's health condition was very serious . He has 10 years of experience in the PM and is the father of a newborn baby.

In a statement, the Civil Police stated that it "requested the presence of official expertise at the site to carry out the usual work and collect elements that will support the investigation."
