Tragic event shocked the community of Rio Cañas, located on the border between the cantons of Carrillo and Santa Cruz, in the province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. At approximately 8:00 am, an unfortunate event was reported involving a 29-year-old resident of the town. According to versions not confirmed by the authorities, the young man, apparently under the influence of alcohol, decided to jump into the river in a reckless act. In a span of just a few seconds, he was surprised by a large crocodile, which preyed on him. The victim of this fatality was identified as Jesús Alberto López Ortiz, alias "Chucho", a young soccer player from the area. His tragic passing leaves two children ages 8 and 3 without a father, and has plunged his family and community into mourning. López was a student at the Liceo de Santa Cruz and since before 2011 he showed his passion for soccer. This sad case has moved everyone, and in this moment of pain, we send our condolences and wish the López Ortiz family strength and peace.
