A deadly shooting occurred at a location commonly known as “The Pit” in north Jefferson County, resulting in one fatality and three injuries. The site, owned by the state’s Department of Transportation for approximately ten years, has long been posted with “No Trespassing” signs, secured with concrete barriers and fenced. Despite these measures, the area reportedly continued to be used for off-roading and late-night social gatherings.

In a statement released after the incident, the Department expressed its sincere condolences to the victims and their families. It emphasized that any access to the property has been unlawful, and noted that it recently increased security measures. The Department further stated that it had not been aware of ongoing illegal activity prior to the shooting, but is now cooperating with investigators to pursue possible criminal charges.

According to the sheriff’s office, a verbal and physical altercation preceded the exchange of gunfire. A suspect has been charged with one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder and is currently held in the county jail without bond.

Fire officials from the nearby community highlighted that the site is frequently used by off-road vehicles such as four-wheelers, UTVs and Jeeps, and that emergency crews have responded to incidents there multiple times. Locals also described the location as a long-standing informal gathering place.

The property was acquired by the Department for the purpose of a planned Northern Beltline project in the Birmingham area. With law-enforcement cooperation, the agency intends to continue addressing unauthorized access and related safety risks.
