The Fresno Police Department has released body camera footage from an incident on August 23 that ended with officers fatally shooting a man following a domestic violence report.

Officers responded to a 911 call from a woman who reported that her husband had assaulted her, attempted to strangle her, and threatened to harm himself. She also stated that he had a knife and that their infant child was with her.

When police arrived at the apartment complex near Blythe Avenue and Austin Way, they found the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Joseph Merical, barricaded inside. Officers attempted to negotiate with him for about 90 minutes but received no response. They eventually breached both the front door and a kitchen window.

Body camera footage shows Merical standing on a couch inside the apartment, holding a knife and blocking the doorway. When he later opened the door and walked down the stairs with knives in both hands, officers fired less-lethal rounds before he continued advancing. Two officers then discharged their rifles, striking Merical.

He was given immediate medical attention at the scene and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities confirmed that no one else was injured. The investigation remains ongoing.
