A man from Georgia has been indicted in Alabama in connection with a boat crash that killed three people and injured others during a fishing tournament.

According to authorities, 22-year-old Flint Andrew Davis of Leesburg, Georgia, is charged in Cullman County with three counts of reckless manslaughter and two counts of first-degree assault. He also faces several misdemeanors, including reckless operation of a vessel, failure to follow boating regulations, and operating without required boating certification.

The fatal accident occurred on April 16 during the Tackle Warehouse Invitational, a Major League Fishing event held on Lewis Smith Lake. Davis’s boat, reported to be traveling at 67 mph, collided with another vessel that was taking part in a charter fishing trip.

The victims were identified as Joey M. Broom, 58; John K. Clark, 44; and Jeffrey C. Little, 62. Broom died from injuries sustained in the collision, while Clark and Little were thrown overboard and later drowned. Two other people onboard the struck vessel sustained serious injuries.

Investigators say the crash was not caused by excessive speed but by “operator inattention” and failure to maintain a proper lookout. They also note that Davis did not hold the necessary boat-safety certifications in either Georgia or Alabama.

Davis is currently out on bail pending trial. Multiple wrongful death lawsuits have been filed in relation to the incident, and the crash has renewed calls for stricter safety requirements and regulation in competitive fishing tournaments.
