On October 2, 2025, a terrorist attack struck outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester, coinciding with Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. A suspect drove a car into pedestrians and then began stabbing people, killing two and seriously injuring four others.

Armed officers responded swiftly and shot the suspect dead. Authorities later confirmed the incident was being treated as a terror attack. Two additional suspects have been arrested, and police are continuing their investigation.

Witnesses reported the attacker crashed into the synagogue’s perimeter before exiting the vehicle and attacking worshippers, including a security guard. A suspected explosive device was found on the suspect’s body, prompting bomb disposal experts to secure the area and carry out a controlled explosion.

The Prime Minister cut short an overseas trip to return to London and chaired an emergency meeting. He condemned the attack as especially appalling given its occurrence on Yom Kippur, and announced heightened security measures at synagogues across the country.

The Jewish community and local residents have been left shaken, with leaders and public officials condemning the violence and urging unity and protection for places of worship.
