Dallas police are investigating a brutal beheading that took place at the Downtown Suites motel in Old East Dallas. The suspect, Yordanis Cobos-Martinez, is being held without bond on charges including capital murder and is also under an immigration hold.

According to the arrest affidavit, on September 10 at about 9:26 a.m., Cobos-Martinez got into a verbal argument with 50-year-old Chandra Mouli Nagamallaiah while they were both working at the motel. The argument stemmed from Nagamallaiah asking Cobos-Martinez not to use a broken washing machine. Cobos-Martinez reportedly was upset that Nagamallaiah was speaking through a coworker instead of addressing him directly.

A witness says the suspect left the room, retrieved a machete, and then attacked Nagamallaiah, striking him multiple times. Nagamallaiah attempted to flee toward the motel’s front office, screaming for help, but Cobos-Martinez chased him. The victim’s wife and son emerged from the front office and tried to intervene, but were pushed aside as the attack continued. The affidavit states that Cobos-Martinez ultimately decapitated Nagamallaiah, then took the head to a dumpster.

After leaving the dumpster, Cobos-Martinez was covered in blood and still in possession of the machete. He was apprehended by authorities shortly thereafter. The suspect admitted to using a machete in the attack and his statements have been backed by video evidence from the scene. He is also being tested to see if any substances were in his system at the time.

Cobos-Martinez has a criminal history, including a conviction in California and arrests in Florida and Houston. He was also previously under an ICE removal order but was released earlier this year due to complications in the removal process.
