A former sports club president, 49-year-old Tuncay Meriç, was fatally shot while dining at a café on Tolgahan Street in the Güngören neighbourhood of Çekmeköy at approximately 21:00 local time. The attack was captured on the café’s security cameras.

Emergency responders confirmed that Meriç had been shot in the head and was transported to a hospital in critical condition—despite life-saving attempts, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities immediately launched a manhunt for the gunman. Two days later, officials announced that the suspect—identified by initials E.H.—was apprehended during an operation in Uzunköprü, Edirne.

Footage from the scene shows the assailant entering the café, drawing a pistol, and opening fire when Meriç was seated. The video also captures patrons fleeing in panic after the discharge.

An eyewitness, Bekir Kaya, described the moment:
“I was at the café with friends. I got up to use the restroom. There was no argument or confrontation. Suddenly, a young man pulled a gun and fired. Everyone scattered—I dropped to the floor myself.”
