The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on the evening of July 10 in the 77th Street Division, following a confrontation with an armed suspect.

According to the LAPD’s Force Investigation Division, the incident happened around 6:20 p.m. near Crenshaw Boulevard, just south of Hyde Park Boulevard. Officers with the division’s Gang Enforcement Detail reported seeing a man, later identified as 63-year-old James Tullous, exit a parked vehicle while carrying a handgun.

Police say Tullous walked onto the sidewalk and became involved in a physical altercation with another man. As officers moved to intervene, Tullous allegedly fired a round from his weapon. Officers returned fire, striking him.

Tullous fell to the ground and officers provided medical aid until Los Angeles Fire Department personnel arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators later determined the incident began as a verbal dispute. The other man involved in the altercation was not injured, and no officers or bystanders were harmed.

Police recovered a semi-automatic handgun at the scene, which was booked into evidence.

The LAPD emphasized that the investigation remains active and that details released so far are preliminary. “The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed,” the agency said in a statement.

The Force Investigation Division continues to review witness statements, forensic materials, and other evidence related to the case.
