Cheektowaga police have released body camera footage showing the fatal shooting of a man, identified as 60-year-old Hugh Davis Jr. from Buffalo. The shooting occurred on August 13 at an apartment on Sanders Road during an attempted arrest. Officers had been responding to a prior incident at a Fairfield Inn, where Davis allegedly assaulted a hotel employee and caused property damage.

According to police, they knocked on Davis’s apartment door and announced they wanted to return some of his property. After noticing a crack in the door, they forced their way in. Davis emerged holding a large knife and lunged at the officers, swinging it twice. In response, one officer fired three shots, striking him. Officers then attempted life-saving measures until emergency responders arrived. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

The footage has been shared with investigators, and the Buffalo Police Department along with the New York State Attorney General’s Office are leading the investigation. All officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending review.
