Fort Pierce, Fla. — Authorities have arrested the driver of a semi-truck following a deadly crash on the Florida Turnpike in St. Lucie County on August 12, 2025.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the semi-truck attempted an illegal U-turn at an “official use only” median near mile marker 171, cutting directly across and in front of a northbound Chrysler Town & Country minivan. The minivan was unable to avoid the maneuver and became wedged under the truck trailer in a devastating accident.

Two passengers in the minivan, a 37-year-old woman from Pompano Beach and a 54-year-old man from Miami, died at the scene. The minivan’s 30-year-old driver from Florida City was airlifted to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he later died.

The semi-truck driver and his passenger, both men in their 20s from California, were unharmed.

Florida troopers obtained an arrest warrant charging the driver, identified as Harjinger Singh, with three counts of vehicular homicide. During the investigation, authorities discovered that Singh had been living illegally in the U.S. since 2018 and had obtained a commercial driver’s license in California, leading to additional immigration-related issues.

Reacting to the tragedy, Dave Kerner, Executive Director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, stated that three people lost their lives as a result of the driver’s recklessness and that he will no longer be able to harm Floridians or visitors.

Investigators continue to probe the incident and circumstances surrounding the semi-truck driver's actions.
