LAS VEGAS — Nearly a month after a fatal police shooting in Henderson, authorities have released new details about the incident that left a 71-year-old man dead following a SWAT operation at his home.
The shooting occurred on the morning of June 26 at a residence on Casa Colorado Avenue, near Boulder Highway and East Twain Avenue. According to Henderson Police Captain Benson Harper, the event was related to an ongoing investigation into a series of golf course burglaries and a stolen vehicle.
Police said the investigation began on the evening of June 23 when officers were tracking a burglary involving a stolen car. That vehicle was later located at the Casa Colorado residence. At approximately 7:00 a.m. on June 26, SWAT officers used a long-range acoustic device to issue commands, deployed distraction devices, and entered the home.
Inside, Officer Michael Stevens encountered Bruce Ayer, 71, in the kitchen. According to police, Ayer was holding what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at officers. Despite repeated commands, he reportedly refused to drop the weapon and advanced toward the officers. Officer Stevens fired two shots, striking Ayer in the torso. Ayer was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Captain Harper stated the weapon in Ayer’s hand was “designed to look like a full-size handgun,” though further details about its authenticity were not provided. The investigation remains ongoing.
Instead of holding a traditional press conference, the department released a video statement via YouTube. When questioned about the lack of a media briefing, a City of Henderson spokesperson cited a shift in department policy under Chief Rader’s administration. The statement emphasized a renewed focus on integrity, accountability, and building public trust through revised communication practices, including the continued use of Critical Incident Community Briefings.
The findings of the investigation will be forwarded to the chief once complete.
