The driver of a suspected stolen vehicle caused a fatal crash after speeding across the Manhattan Bridge and losing control early Saturday morning, according to police. The incident occurred just before 7:30 a.m. when a blue Chevrolet Malibu struck and killed two individuals at the intersection of Bowery and Canal Street.

The victims were a man in his 30s who was riding a bicycle and a 63-year-old woman who was sitting on a bench. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle, which had Wisconsin license plates, also collided with a parked, unoccupied NYPD van, totaling it. Police sources reported that the car contained alcohol, marijuana, and pills at the time of the crash.

The driver, who had turned 23 the previous day, and her 22-year-old female passenger attempted to flee the scene on foot but were quickly apprehended by officers nearby. They were both taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation and drug testing after a warrant was obtained.

Photos from the scene showed the driver being carried by officers into the 5th Precinct, visibly injured and unresponsive. The passenger, seen with bloodstains on her clothing, was escorted into custody in handcuffs.

According to authorities, the car had been rented last month but was not returned by its due date of June 29, making it 17 days overdue. The rental company had previously attempted to contact the passenger and had alerted police to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

Family members later confirmed the identity of the 63-year-old female victim. Her brother expressed grief and frustration, emphasizing that the incident was not a simple accident but a crime that took his sister’s life. He described her as a “free-spirited person” who regularly spent time and attended church in the Chinatown area.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time.
