ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A 57-year-old man was shot and killed by Orange County deputies during a standoff Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.
The incident began around 12:45 p.m. at the Isles at East Millenia apartments on Lake Fountain Drive in Orlando. Deputies responded after receiving a call from a woman who reported that her boyfriend had been smoking drugs and held her at knifepoint overnight, said Undersheriff Mark Canty.
When deputies established probable cause to arrest the suspect for aggravated assault, the man barricaded himself inside the apartment. By that time, the woman who made the call had already managed to leave the apartment, Canty said.
At approximately 2:45 p.m., deputies called in crisis negotiators and SWAT.
According to the sheriff's office, once inside the unit, the suspect emerged from a room armed with a knife and moved toward law enforcement. Two deputies opened fire, striking the man.
He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting. The deputies involved have been placed on temporary paid administrative leave.
The sheriff’s office stated that body-worn camera footage will be released within the next 30 days.
