Video shows a prison guard getting hung after prisoners took guards hostage following a drug lord’s escape in Ecuador.
Fito, whose real name is Adolfo Macías Villamar, the leader of the Los Choneros criminal group, disappeared from the jail where he was being held, authorities said on Sunday and launched an operation to locate him.
Ecuador’s security forces are since trying to re-establish order in at least six jails where riots broke out on Monday.
Inmates have reportedly taken a number of prison guards hostage and have threatened to kill them if soldiers are deployed to regain control of the penitentiaries.
Four police officers were also kidnapped after President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency. Gunmen in Ecuador also stormed a TV station during a live broadcast.
Macias was sentenced in 2011 to 34 years in prison for various crimes including drug trafficking and murder.
Los Choneros is a criminal organization authorities have linked to extortion, murder and drug trafficking, among other crimes, and accused of controlling the country’s main prisons.
