A woman was shot and killed in Northwest Washington, D.C., before the suspected gunman was fatally shot by police during a confrontation aboard a Metrobus, authorities said.

According to investigators, 44-year-old Melissa Wallace-Pulliam was shot in the 3600 block of Wisconsin Avenue NW shortly after 7 a.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the suspect, identified as 44-year-old Shawn Williams, was believed to have had a prior domestic relationship with the victim.

Following the shooting, the suspect boarded a northbound Metrobus. Witnesses provided officers with a description of the man and identified the bus he had boarded, allowing police to locate and stop the vehicle near the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue NW and Upton Street NW.

Authorities said officers began evacuating passengers before confronting the suspect. Police stated that the man reached into a bag, ignored repeated commands to stop, and then pointed a firearm toward officers, prompting them to open fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No passengers were injured during the confrontation.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy while the incident is investigated. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding both the fatal shooting of the woman and the subsequent police shooting.
