A father and his nine-year-old son were killed after a car mounted a sidewalk and struck them in the town of Bardo, Poland.

According to investigators, the incident occurred on the afternoon of June 10 when a 52-year-old driver lost control of his Toyota for reasons that remain under investigation. The vehicle left the roadway, drove onto the sidewalk, and hit the two pedestrians before rebounding off a wall and colliding with another car traveling in the opposite direction.

The victims, a 48-year-old man and his nine-year-old son, died from their injuries. Authorities confirmed that the driver survived the crash and was transported to hospital. Police stated that he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.

Prosecutors have charged the driver with causing a fatal traffic accident. During questioning, he reportedly denied responsibility and claimed he could not remember the events leading up to the crash. If convicted, he could face up to eight years in prison.
