A woman was found dead and the suspected gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a lengthy SWAT standoff at an apartment complex near Katy, Texas, authorities said.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to The Century Apartments on Katy Gap Road after receiving a 911 call from 23-year-old Caleb Green, who claimed he had accidentally shot his girlfriend. When deputies arrived, they discovered the woman dead inside the apartment with gunshot wounds.

Investigators said Green refused to surrender and remained barricaded inside the apartment for several hours. During the standoff, he reportedly threatened to take his own life while speaking with law enforcement and crisis negotiators. SWAT officers and specialized response teams were deployed to the scene as authorities worked to resolve the situation peacefully.

After repeated attempts to persuade him to surrender, tactical officers deployed gas into the apartment. Green then moved onto a balcony, where he fatally shot himself. No law enforcement officers fired their weapons during the incident.

Authorities said the victim was approximately 20 years old. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the relationship between the two individuals. Preliminary information suggests Green had been dealing with personal hardships and relationship difficulties in the months leading up to the incident.

The case remains under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
