Authorities have identified both the victim and the suspect in a fatal stabbing that occurred aboard a MARTA train in Atlanta, Georgia.
The victim, 66-year-old Margaret Swan, was riding a northbound train when she was allegedly attacked without warning by 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews. Investigators said surveillance footage showed no indication that the two knew each other or had interacted before the incident.
According to MARTA Police, the attack took place as the train approached Oakland City Station. Matthews allegedly used a folding knife to repeatedly stab Swan in what authorities described as an unprovoked assault. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, but Swan later died from her injuries.
Witnesses alerted transit police immediately after the attack. Officers responded at Oakland City Station, where the suspect was taken into custody. Investigators recovered a knife believed to have been used in the assault and are reviewing surveillance footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
Matthews has been charged with murder, and federal authorities have also filed charges related to violence committed on a mass transportation system. Prosecutors are continuing to examine the case while officials work to determine a motive for the attack.
The killing has renewed concerns about safety across Atlanta's public transportation network and prompted calls for increased security measures on MARTA trains and stations.
