Traditional Leader Dies After Accidental Shooting at Funeral in Ghana

Nana Kwabena Okyere, the Mmrantehene of the Ayanfuri Traditional Area in Ghana’s Central Region, died after accidentally shooting himself during a funeral ceremony.

The incident occurred on May 8, 2026, during the funeral rites of a local elder in Ayanfuri. According to reports, the traditional leader was handling a pump-action shotgun as part of a ceremonial display when the weapon discharged, striking him in the abdomen.

He was rushed to Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Police officers responded to the hospital after receiving a distress call and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

His body was transferred to the Dunkwa-on-Offin Municipal Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy and further inquiries.

The incident has sparked discussion in Ghana about firearm safety during traditional ceremonies and public events.
