An attempted robbery at a gas station was thwarted after two police officers opened fire on a suspect, leaving one alleged offender seriously injured, authorities reported.

The incident occurred around 6:00 a.m. on February 16, 2026, at a service station at the intersection of Route 102 and Garzón in Montevideo. Two men allegedly attempted to carry out the robbery when they were confronted by people at the scene.

According to police, a 53-year-old retired officer who was present responded first, using his personal firearm after the suspects reportedly displayed what appeared to be weapons. A 42-year-old off-duty police officer also intervened, firing his service weapon.

One of the suspected offenders, an adult male, was shot in the head and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to a medical facility under police custody. The second suspect fled but was later arrested following court-authorized searches in Las Piedras. Authorities said the detained individual is a 22-year-old with no prior criminal record.

Investigators recovered evidence at the scene, including a helmet, stolen money, a blank-firing pistol, and 9mm shell casings. The prosecutor’s office has taken charge of the case, and investigations remain ongoing, including a review of surveillance footage.

Video footage of the incident captured the moment police intervened to stop the robbery, drawing public attention to the case.
