A driver foiled a robbery attempt on a highway in Chile by running over one of the thieves who tried to block his vehicle, according to reports and video circulating on social media.

The incident took place Saturday afternoon in the Quilicura area of the Santiago metropolitan region. The driver was traveling on a road connecting Route 5 with the Vespucio Norte highway when a black pickup truck ahead suddenly swerved and stopped to block his path.

Two armed men exited the pickup and approached the vehicle. One attempted to block the driver’s way while the other pointed a firearm at the windshield.

Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated and struck one of the attackers, sending him off the road, before continuing on to escape the scene.

Dashcam footage captured the moment of the attempted robbery and the driver’s escape, with a passenger reacting to the danger of the situation. This type of robbery, known locally as an “encerrona,” involves criminals blocking vehicles to intimidate occupants and steal from them.

Authorities have not released further details as investigations continue.
