Surveillance footage has captured the terrifying moment a 24-hour shop in Mtwapa was violently attacked by a gang, raising renewed concerns over security in Kilifi County.

In the early hours of the morning, at approximately 2:28 a.m., what began as a routine night quickly turned into a scene of chaos. CCTV footage shows the shopkeeper, whose identity has been withheld for security reasons, calmly serving two men at the counter before the situation suddenly escalated.

Moments later, a larger group of more than five men emerged and stormed the shop. Armed with machetes, commonly known as pangas, and heavy sticks, the attackers overwhelmed the shopkeeper as he attempted to secure the premises.

Outnumbered and facing deadly weapons, the shopkeeper was forced to lie on the floor as the gang ransacked the store. The attackers made away with cash and various items before fleeing the scene.

Although the raid lasted only a short time, the incident left the shopkeeper traumatised and has sent shockwaves through the local business community, particularly among traders who operate late at night.

Residents and business owners have since raised concerns about growing insecurity in the area, calling for stronger law enforcement presence and improved safety measures to protect businesses and livelihoods.

The incident adds to a worrying pattern of violent crime in Mtwapa, intensifying calls for urgent action to address rising security challenges in the region.
