A military police officer was shot and killed inside a pharmacy in the Curuçambá neighborhood of Ananindeua, in the metropolitan region of Belém, Brazil, on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Anderson Guedes Dias, a reserve member of the Military Police. Initial reports indicate he was inside the establishment when an armed man entered. The officer attempted to draw his own weapon in self-defense, but was struck by gunfire before he could effectively respond.

A woman present at the scene reportedly screamed in distress; preliminary accounts suggest she may be the officer’s wife and the owner of the pharmacy.

After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene accompanied by an accomplice who was waiting on a motorcycle. Neither of the suspects has been located so far.

Military Police teams isolated the area and began searching for the suspects. Forensic experts have begun examining the scene, and witnesses are being interviewed to clarify the circumstances of the crime. The motive remains unknown.
