MONTEBELLO, Calif. – New video captured the moment a Montebello police vehicle hit a person crossing the street, leaving him in critical condition.

The incident occurred Saturday evening just outside the Golden Manor Retirement Center on Beverly Boulevard and Howard Avenue. Staff at the facility told Eyewitness News the pedestrian who was struck was one of their residents.

A witness said the police car pushed the man into the air. Surveillance footage shows the man crossing the street in a marked crosswalk, only steps away from the sidewalk, when the police car in the right lane struck him. Moments later, the officer exited the vehicle and ran toward the man, who landed several yards away.

Another witness who knows the victim described him as a friendly person well-liked by residents, and said many are worried about his condition.

Police said the officer was responding to a call about a possible DUI suspect at the time of the crash. It does not appear the officer had lights or sirens activated.

People familiar with the area said drivers need to be more cautious, especially when elderly pedestrians are crossing the street.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where police say he is in critical but stable condition. However, some who know him say his condition remains very serious.

It is unclear if the officer was injured.

The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.
