At least five people have been killed after being trampled by wild elephants in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, officials said. The deaths occurred in separate incidents over a short period as elephant herds moved through forested and nearby rural areas, raising concerns over increasing human–wildlife conflict.

According to authorities, three people were killed in the Sirka forest area of Ramgarh district after coming into contact with roaming elephants. In another incident in the Angara area of Ranchi district, a 36-year-old man died after sustaining severe injuries during an elephant encounter.

In a particularly tragic case, a 32-year-old man was reportedly attacked and trampled to death after approaching a herd of elephants, allegedly to record videos and take photographs.

Another victim later died while undergoing medical treatment for injuries sustained in a separate encounter, bringing the total death toll to five. Two additional people were injured and are currently receiving treatment in hospital.

Forest officials said multiple elephant herds are active in the region and have urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid forested areas where elephants are known to roam. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are working to prevent further incidents.
