Video footage shows a truck overturning and a structure collapsing onto the workers. One of the victims died upon arrival at the hospital, while another injured worker was rescued by paramedics and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

A worker identified as Antônio Paulo Rodrigues de Souza, 40, known as “Antônio Suricate,” died on Sunday morning (23) after a crane overturned during the installation of a Christmas tree at Largo São Sebastião, in front of the Amazonas Theatre, in central Manaus. Another worker, Henes Libório Ramos, 47, was injured in the incident and continues to receive medical treatment in stable condition.

The crane was being operated by Antônio Benjamin, who had been hired by the company for a single day of work. He was reportedly on medical leave from the Brazilian Social Security Institute and receiving disability benefits at the time, yet was working while dressed as Santa Claus and without any personal protective equipment. Benjamin was arrested shortly after the accident.
