A man in his 70s was shot and killed after deputies arrived at his home in Alpine, California, for a welfare check. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office entered the residence after a neighbour reported concern over the man’s welfare. Shortly after entering, the man emerged holding a replica firearm and was fatally shot by a deputy.

The California Department of Justice has taken over the investigation under state law, and the deputies involved have been reassigned while the case is reviewed.
