A man was killed in Southport by a Bay County sheriff’s deputy. The incident occurred shortly after the deputy responded to a home in the area following a 911 call reporting that a man was acting erratically and was possibly armed.

According to surveillance and body-camera footage released by the sheriff’s office, the man emerged from the residence holding a long-handled tool or machete. He then advanced quickly toward the responding officers.

The deputy, stating that he faced an immediate threat, fired at the man. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office reported that the deputy acted in accordance with procedure. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now conducting a full review of the shooting.
